Raiders target four stores in Glasgow arcade

Masked raiders launches a co-ordinated attack on four watch and jewellery stores in Glasgow’s Argyll Arcade at early this afternoon, escaping with Hublot and Bell & Ross watches.

The gang failed to enter Laing the Jeweller, Mappin & Webb and Lewis Grant but managed to steal watches from Rox. The attempt on Laing the Jeweller triggered the store’s fogging defence system filling the luxury shopping arcade, which is predominantly home to jewellery retailers, with thick smoke.

Staff in the targeted stores were unharmed, although a security guard was injured as the gang made their escape towards Buchanan Street. They made off in a white VW Golf which was later recovered.

A flurry of photos and videos have since appeared on social media showing the gang running through the arcade smashing windows at 12.45pm.

Glasgow Police have described the four men as 5ft 8in tall, of slim build and wearing dark clothing.

A spokesman for Rox said: “We can confirm that the ROX store in the Argyll Arcade, Glasgow was targeted by armed robbers on the 24th September 2014. Staff are badly shaken but thankfully no-one was hurt.

“A stock take is underway however luxury watches from brands including Hublot and Bell & Ross were taken. The store is closed until further notice and our main priority is the safety and well-being of our staff. The matter is now in the hands of the police and we have no further comment at this time.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact police.
