New York vintage watch auction nets $3.6 million

Antiquorum New York’s auction of Important Modern and Vintage Timepieces generated total sales of $ 3,638,187 in a sale last week.

Over 450 timepieces went under the hammer with bidders in the Manhattan sale room battling with commission, telephone and internet bidders from the UK, Asia and the Middle East.

The highest price of the day was paid for a Jaeger-LeCoultre Reverso Gyrotourbillon 2, No 04/75. The reversible limited edition pink gold watch, with visible Jaeger-LeCoultre caliber 174 with inclined two-cage multi-axis spherical tourbillon, sold for $255,750.

“Modern limited edition watches in exceptional condition obtained remarkable prices in our September auction,” said Evan Zimmermann, president & CEO, Antiquorum.

Six figure sums were also paid for a Greubel Forsey Double Tourbillon 30 degree Vision, No. 58, which sold for $219,750; a Hublot Ref. MP-02 Flying Tourbillon Titanium PVD Coated wristwatch, which netted $147,750; and the Audemars Piguet Ref. CCW1 Carbon Royal Oak Concept 2, which went for $141,750.

Patek Philippe timepieces continue to command high prices at auction. In today’s sale, both the Patek Philippe Ref. 5070 Chronograph in yellow gold and the Patek Philippe Ref. 5940 Perpetual Calendar in yellow gold fetched $62,500.

Watches with interesting back stories pulled in premium prices. A Swiss lady’s gold pocket watch given by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert to their daughter HRH Princess Alice (1843-1878) for her 12th birthday, sold for $26,250.

“Timepieces with exceptional provenance continue to attract global attention,” said Saori Omura, Watch Director Antiquorum New York. “We were delighted that the pocket watch given to Prince Alice by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert inspired highly competitive bidding, selling for an outstanding $26,250, over eight times its pre-auction estimate.

Antiquorum’s next auction is on October 26 in Hong Kong, and features another collectable mix of complicated modern watches from brands such as Patek Philippe, Jaeger-LeCoultre, and A. Lange & Sohne.
