Lumbers sells most expensive watch to date

By Kathryn Lewis

Leicester watch retailer Lumbers secured its most expensive watch sale to date, selling a £395,000 Breguet Hora Mundi to a dedicated collector last week.

The watch, made by the Swiss company Breguet, has a case encrusted with more than 20cts of diamonds and a dial displaying a European map set with diamonds and sapphires. It is said to be the first watch in the world to display two time zones at once.

"We are proud to sell such an important watch,” Dominic Gomersall, the managing director of Lumbers said in a statement yesterday.

Lumbers is one of just four retailers licensed to sell Swatch Group brand Breguet in the UK.

“The same collector purchased a Tourbillion earlier in the year at £216,000 and his collection of Breguets is quite remarkable. It is lovely to deal with a collector who understands the importance and quality of this historic brand.”

Dating back to 1775, Breguet made watches for the likes of Napoleon and the Duke of Wellington, both of whom donned Breguet watches during the Battle of Waterloo.
