Louis Moinet watches celebrate great world cities

Louis Moinet says it intends to highlight achievements of notable capital cities around the world with the release of limited edition timepieces that draw inspiration from their architecture and skylines.

The Mecanograph City Limited Editions, which launched with the Mechanograph Qatar (a country, not a city, Louis Moinet should note), has been joined by the Mechanograph New York (not a capital city, Louis Mouinet should note).

Like the Qatar timepiece, the New York version features stunning engraving on the face of famous skyscrapers. In Qatar’s case, it is the Doha skyline that is depicted. In New York, it mixes historic high rises with a bang up-to-date rendition of One World Trade Centre, the tallest building to emerge from the Ground Zero area of Manhattan.

“Louis Moinet’s Mecanograph City Limited Editions showcase the dynamism of the world’s greatest capital cities. They are a celebration and a tribute to the impact these cities have had on culture and architecture,” the company says.

A special touch with the New York Mechanograph is the incorporation of a fragment of the ‘New York Meteorite’, which was allegedly given to a fisherman by an Inuit in 1965.

The central element of the watch face is the One World Trade Center building, Manhattan’s tallest skyscraper at 541m high. “It was chosen because it symbolises New York’s revival,” says Louis Moiney.

Other emblematic skyscrapers on the face include the Chrysler Building and the Empire State Building. The famous Brooklyn Bridge, which dates back to 1883 and spans the East River, is also represented. Hand engraving takes more than twenty hours of work for each face, the company says.

Two limited editions have been released, 60 in titanium costing $29,900, and 60 in rose gold priced at $55,000.
