Swiss watchmaker Longines will be the Official Timekeeper and the Official Watch of the 20th Commonwealth Games, which takes place in Glasgow, Scotland, from July 23rd to the August 3rd, 2014.
An international, multi-sport event, the Commonwealth Games brings together 70 teams consisting of 4,500 athletes, who will participate in 17 sports, including gymnastics, wrestling and judo. The event was first held in 1930 and takes place every four years. 1,000,000 tickets to the Glasgow 2014 games will be sold and up to 15,000 local volunteers will help ensure the 20th edition of the event goes smoothly.
On October 9th, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II launched the Glasgow 2014 Queen’s Baton Relay on its multinational journey in a ceremony at Buckingham Palace attended by top Scottish athletes, inspirational young people, and senior representatives from across the Commonwealth. Accompanied by His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, The Queen placed a message calling athletes to next the games inside a specially-made baton, which will visit the 70 nations and territories of the Commonwealth before it is revealed at the opening ceremony.
Longines’ involvement in the Commonwealth Games dates back to 1962, when it served as timekeeper for the games in Perth, Australia.
