IWC has hosted a gala dinner in support of young filmmakers as part of New York’s 2014 Tribeca Film Festival.
Stars attending the For the Love of Cinema dinner at the Urban Zen loft in Lower Manhattan included festival co-founder Robert De Niro, Patrick Stewart, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Heather Graham, Dev Patel, James Marsden, and Armie Hammer.
Filmmaker Jay Dockendorf was announced as the winner of IWC’s $25,000 (£14,859) Filmmaker Award for his film Naz + Maalik.
He also received a limited edition ‘Tribeca Film Festival’ IWC Spitfire Chronograph, a unique 18ct red gold example of which sold for $55,000 at Antiquorum New York earlier this month. IWC rounded the figure up to $100,000 and presented the sum to the Tribeca Film Institute to support filmmakers.
“Jay Dockendorf really understands how to address his audience’s intelligence and his artistic interpretation of reality such as his professional way of telling stories are outstanding,” said Georges Kern, explaining the jury’s choice. “His sensitive take on the realities of life left a lasting mark on us all, and we look forward to seeing more films with his signature.”
Last year’s winner Jeff Malmberg, who sat on the jury this year, said: “Winning the IWC Filmmaker Award has helped me continue essential work on my second film, which would not otherwise have been possible. One of the issues with filmmaking is the incredible amount of time it all takes. The IWC award gives filmmakers the time they need to tell their stories the right way.”
