INSIGHT: Parmigiani Fleurier reveals secrets behind white grained dials

Swiss brand Parmigiani Fleurier has offered an inside look into the creation of its 2017 Toric Chronomètre.

In a new report, the label has revealed the secrets behind the watch’s white grained finish, a complex process which ensures each dial is unique.

The grained effect is produced by rubbing silver powder onto a brass plate to create a textured surface.

The force and duration of the rubbing  action and the properties of the silver mixture determine how pronounced and luminous the final grain is. Everything is done by hand with a horsehair brush.

Parmigiani Fleurier said the artisans who craft these dials are trained for years, adapting their technique and finding the ideal balance to create a perfect grained finish.

“It requires scarce and highly developed skill to create a captivating texture achieved by hand-brushing the surface of the dial with a silver powder mixture,” the brand said.
