IN PICS: Grand Seiko launches avant garde chronographs

In the past Grand Seiko was more likely to be accused of being too conservative rather than overtly flamboyant, but that might be about to change with the launch of a new photographic project.

To mark the launch of its new sports Grand Seiko Black Ceramic Limited Edition Grand Seiko has employed the talents of two of Japan’s photographic masters to imbue the watches with a playful, artistic element.

Daido Moriyama and Nobuyoshi Araki have contributed their most iconic images to decorate double wrap straps.

The straps and the original images were the subject of the Grand Seiko Avant-garde exhibition at Baselworld 2016.

Moriyama’s expressive black and white shots were taken during his ‘wanderings in urban landscapes’ while Araki’s work celebrates ‘eroticism, sex and death’.

Two versions of the Black Ceramic Limited Edition chronographs are being launched this month while two GMT versions will be launched in July. Each watch will be presented with an additional, regular length strap and an image of each photographer’s work.
