Hamilton & Inches hit by £1million raid

Blade-wielding raiders escaped Hamilton & Inches’ Edinburgh store with more than £1 million of watches and jewellery on Friday.

Staff were left shaken by the raid on the George Street jewellers  and police in Edinburgh are appealing for witnesses and further information regarding the robbery, which took place at about 11.30am on Friday June 6.

According to a police statement, three men dressed in dark clothing entered the Hamilton and Inches shop on George Street and threatened staff with various bladed weapons.

The trio then smashed a number of display cabinets before fleeing the shop "with a significant quantity of jewellery". All of the suspects were then seen entering a white BMW car, which was recovered a short time later in Gloucester Lane, Edinburgh.

The men abandoned the vehicle before getting into a medium-to-large sized, dark-coloured car that was last seen heading towards Stockbridge.

Edinburgh police force has asked anyone who can assist officers with their ongoing investigation to contact police immediately.

According to the police, a full inventory of the stolen items is ongoing, however it is estimated that more than £1 million pounds worth of goods were stolen.

While no details have been given of specific items taken in the raid, Hamilton & Inches stocks jewellery and watch brands including Stephen Webster, Georg Jensen, Coleman Douglas Pearls, Patek Philippe, Rolex, Zenith, Bremont and Omega.
Detective Inspector Craig Finnie said: "Staff were left extremely shaken and a major investigation is underway to trace those responsible.

"While we remain keen to speak with witnesses who were in the George Street area at the time of the robbery, we also wish to trace anyone who remembers seeing both getaway vehicles in the Gloucester Lane area before or after the crime was committed."

DI Finnie has urged with any further information relevant to this enquiry is also asked to contact police immediately.

A statement on homepage of the Hamilton & Inches website reads: "As reported in the news, there was a serious incident at Hamilton & Inches, Edinburgh. I am pleased to say that all of our staff are okay. We will however be closed for business in order to make our showroom safe. You can leave a message with us on 0131 225 4898 or info@hamiltonandinches.com. Please be assured that all of our customer’s jewellery is held safely in our vaults and is untouched."

The company also issued a Tweet on Friday June 6, stating that its Edinburgh showroom will be closed in order to make it safe.
