Failed robbery at Robert Gatward in Ipswich

Robert Gatward Jewellers in Ipswich was targeted by a moped gang believed to be trying to steal Rolex watches.

The shop was attacked yesterday afternoon at about 4.50pm by a gang of four riding two mopeds that tried to "smash the front windows of the shop with what is believed to be an axe and a jemmy like tool" according to Suffolk Police.

The attack was thwarted by a member of staff at Robert Gatward who saw the mopeds driving slowly towards the shop and alerted colleagues. Security procedures were then activated and the alarm was raised.

Acting Detective Inspector Dan Connick from Ipswich CID said: “This is obviously quite a distressing incident for the staff at the jewellers, but thankfully due to their quick actions they were able to activate their security procedures and entry to the store wasn’t gained."

No items were stolen during the attack although speculation in the local press suggests that the gang had been targeting new Rolex watches on display at the shop. While the gang failed to smash through the windows and access the stock they caused "considerable damage".

Suffolk Police said that they are continuing to investigate the incident.
