Electronics giant Sony produces e-paper smartwatch with customisable screen and strap

The watch was introduced first in Japan, China and Hong Kong and reaches Europe this month.

Electronics giant Sony has launched a connected fashion watch. The FES Watch U uses e-Paper technology similar to an Amazon Kindle that can be read in bright light, customized with unlimited designs, and doesn’t run out of battery after a day.

The watch was introduced first in Japan, China and Hong Kong and reaches Europe this month.

It uses active matrix flexible e-Paper on both the face and strap, both of which can be personalized to complement a customer’s fashion, mood and attitude.

A range of over 100 different pre-loaded grayscale designs are available in the dedicated ‘FES Closet’ app for wearers to choose from.

Sony is working with a range of designers and will be adding new styles to the app each month.

Users can also personalise the watch by creating their own unique design for both the face and strap, including modified versions of photographs taken on a connected smartphone.

The idea of the watch came from a new business creation program within Sony, known as the Seed Acceleration Program (SAP). Launched in April 2014, the program encourages innovation by creating start-up projects, both from within Sony and externally, and supporting their business operations.

It is available in silver or black and is priced at £529 and £699.
