Edward and Mrs Simpson story fails to spark interest in a Cartier timepiece they owned went on sale

A pocket watch that was given as a gift to King Edward VIII from his American partner Wallis Simpson, has failed to meet its reserve at a Henry Aldridge and Sons auction in Wiltshire.

The onyx Cartier timepiece, which was given to the monarch in April 1936, had a pre-sale guide price of £25,000.

Auctioneer Andrew Aldridge told the BBC: “there has been a declining interest in royal memorabilia” in recent years.

Mr Aldridge said the watch, which was given to the king a few months before his abdication, represented “a small but important part of “one of the most controversial love stories of the 20th Century”.
