CSM student Sophie E Ellis exhibits watches at IJL

Watch designer Sophie E Ellis was selected by a panel of judges to exhibit at London trade show IJL this week as part ofthe annual Bright Young Gems collective.

Ellis is a student at Central Saint Martins and is only the second student in the prestigious college’s history to work with watches, the first studying at the school 20 years ago.

The designer creates luxury watches with a twist. Her designs range from the obscure, such as an 18ct gold model that is simply a silhouette of a watch with no face or timekeeping mechanisms, to quality design-led timepieces, such as the Fingerprint watch that has a fingerprint design impressed on the 18ct gold case.

Speaking of her design work, Ellis said: “I have blasphemously deconstructed and ironically rebuilt the luxury wristwatch in a collection of enigmatic timepieces intended to hint at a modern and realistic attitude of time.”

She has been awarded a scholarship by The Goldsmiths Company to study watchmaking in Geneva, something she will begin next year and will auction an openwork 18ct gold and diamond bracelet in the shape of a watch at Salon QP to raise money to fund her studies.

The Sophie E Ellis brand is setting alongside fellow Bright Young Gems picks jewellers Katie Jamieson, Stephanie Chloe Bila and Nilplug. The initiative is run at IJL each year and features a selection of up-and-coming designers who have been picked by a panel of judges that consider them to be design stars of the future.
