1958 ‘007’ Submariner goes under the hammer at Fellows

Star lot, a 37mm stainless-steel Oyster Perpetual Submariner reference 6538, is being promoted as the same model favoured by Sean Connery in early James Bond movies such as Dr No.

A rare 1950s Rolex Submariner, complete with original box and papers, could sell for £60,000 when it goes up for auction at Fellows next week (August 28).

The watch, a 37mm stainless-steel Oyster Perpetual Submariner reference 6538, is being promoted as the same model favoured by Sean Connery in early James Bond movies such as Dr No, although the auctioneer stresses there is no direct link to the film franchise.

The value is greatly enhanced by its original box and papers dating it to 1958, although it does have some replacement parts.

It has a black dial with luminous hour markers, and an outer minute track. It is fitted to a signed stainless-steel Oyster bracelet with Oysterclasp and features the original Rolex Submariner dial.

Laura Bishop, watch manager at Fellows Auctioneers, says: “We are delighted to be showcasing such a fascinating and rare item. These 6538 models do not come up for sale often so we are very excited to see how the bidding goes. This watch has got some service replacement parts but this does not detract from the true nature of the watch. I can’t wait to see how it does on the day.”
