A 19-year-old from the Netherlands has launched his own watch brand, Mooren Watch, following in the footsteps of his watchmaker uncle.

Mick Mooren, founder of the brand, has just launched his first range of automatic watches, called New Vintage, with ‘Dutch Made’ stamped on the dial.

He said: “Since I have always felt the need to start something for myself and since I turned 18 a few months earlier – and was therefore able to start my own business – I decided to completely focus on one design and to completely fine tune this design in order to make my own watch for my own watch brand, Mooren.

“The idea of starting a new, young and distinctive watch brand was and still is very appealing to me and I am doing the best I can to make this into a success and to offer a genuinely high quality watch with a distinctive design.”

The 42.2mm New Vintage watches have black or cream dials with orange details and a cross decoration on the dial that mimics the shape of an hourglass.

The stainless steel cases are sourced in Germany with AR-coated sapphire crystal. They house Swiss automatic ETA caliber 2824 movements, with nickeled hands featuring orange Superluminova.

The debut collection will retail for around EUR 840 (£665).

Mooren was gifted a watchmakers bench at the age of 17 by his father and uncle, who is also a watchmaker.

“[My uncle] was too old to be able to keep doing watchmaking and was happy to give it to me, because he would then know that his tools and workbench would still be used,” said Mooren.

Mooren adds that the idea behind the Mooren brand “is to not be a copy of what already exists”.

“The concept is to incorporate vintage details in a modern but still timeless design, I call it: a young vision on watchmaking,” he explained.

Past projects for Mooren have included he refurbishment of a 1973 El Primero, while he says the internet and a book from the 1950s called Modern watch Repairing have helped him learn all he can about watchmaking.
